Make 2019 Your Year!

In early January I took a break for a week and when I came back it was mayhem at the clinic. The demand for osteopathy was huge. I was squeezing people in left right and centre. One day I think I had about a forty five minute break in a ten hour day…and then had to visit my daughter who is burning-out from bringing up triplets, working part time and dealing with the stressors of keeping it together in a fast paced world…whew…I really need another week off.

During this hectic period, it struck me how many of us…sadly, myself included…know what to do to take good care of our bodies - but don’t do it, or can’t quite get it together.

What’s the big deal…why don’t we?

Too busy…haven’t got time…can’t afford to?

Some people come to the clinic in so much pain I’m thinking “will I need to call an ambulance”.

I really admire people who come in with a developing problem and want a tune-up to get back on the front foot. Then they to go over the remedial exercises again so that they have them clear in their minds to include them in their health regime.

But mostly it’s…”I know what to do but I just don’t seem to be able to find the time”.

The crazy thing is ... only when something in our body breaks will we take it seriously.

“Wow, you’re looking great”! – ‘yeah, I had heart surgery so have to exercise and watch what I eat’.

People think they are bullet-proof until they’re not. They guy who edits my articles is a heavy smoker. He knows all the risks but still smokes. Granted, he has a healthy diet and exercises well but - 40 chemicals enter his body with every puff.

We all know the risks of neglecting our health but somehow we do not value ourselves enough to put our very health and well being near the top of the list.

So, what can you resolve-to-do this year to honour your own well being and not end up on the burn-out continuum like half the people that come through my clinic?

First of all DO NOT be self-conscious about stretching your body wherever you are. Believe that most people will be thinking “that’s what I should be doing”.

If you are an office worker, take a yoga mat to lie on and find 10 minutes a day to stretch those muscles.

On a building site? Drop the tool belt, grab a piece of plywood to lie on and go for it.

Wherever you are, whatever you do, make the time for yourself.

Rein in your scattered energy…focus your innate power and direct it for your own good…do something that is good for ‘your’ soul…

Put your health and well being higher up the list before the wakeup call forces you into evasive action.
